The average working - class adult today is pressed for time. It is not uncommon to hear people complaining about how they don’t have the time to exercise, or the time to meditate, or even to spend with their loved ones.
We all wish we had more time, but we only have 24 hours in a day. Is there anything we can do to free up time from our hectic schedules? Or are we destined to a life of working, paying bills and waiting for the weekend, only to repeat it all over again the following week?
It is easy to say Pinterest-y things like, “do what you love and you will never work a day in your life” and other cliché sayings that have a good sound bite, but aren’t implementable. However, not all of us are fortunate enough to do what we love for a living.There are millions of non-glamourous, mundane, 9-5 jobs that someone has to do for societies and communities to function as they do.
We don’t have any magical solutions that can help to unlock extra leisure time. What we do have is one single suggestion based on scientific studies that can not only free up a little time of your day, but could also play a substantial role in increasing general well -being, overall happiness and life satisfaction.
A recent study published in the World Leisure Journal suggests a strong link between your commute time to work and your overall life satisfaction. The jury is out, long commutes to work and back is the murderer, and its victim is contentment.
The more time you take to get to work, the less satisfied you are going to be. Contrary to initial anecdotal consensus, longer commutes are shown to affect and increase sense of time pressure. Furthermore, other studies have already linked long commutes to poorer mental and physical health which includes conditions such as obesity, fatigue, stress and hypertension.
The reason for these new findings is believed to be more than just “crazy-traffic”, longer commutes basically eat up your “not-on-the-clock” hours and this leads to lower life satisfaction and lesser time to do other things you actually enjoy doing, like playing Action Bank slots at Kitty Bingo for example.
Another interesting side note from this study is that the negative consequences of a longer commute are more enhanced in women and in individuals with a partner or a spouse.
If you are spending too much time on your commute to work and back, you can stand to benefit most by taking measures to somehow cut down the commute time.
What can you do?
The first thing you can do is actually take the commute issue seriously and understand that over the long-term it can really affect your life negatively. Once you comprehend the magnitude of the problem, you will actually consider doing something about it – even though that might mean making other sacrifices.
Even if you have to choose a job that pays a little lesser, it could be the wiser decision if it cuts down your commute time aggressively.
You can also consider moving closer to your work place. You will not only save time which you can enjoy as leisure time, but you could also save money that the longer commute costed.
Another hack would be to request for a shift or flexible timings, which allows you to commute during non – peak hours if that makes sense in your context.
